American voters consistently voice concerns about the 81-year-old’s competence
Ex-White House aide Steve Bannon has gleefully mocked 46th President Joe Biden from a low-security federal prison.
Bannon, who is serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress after turning himself in on July 1, appeared to throw his weight behind former boss Donald Trump.
“We got the candidate we want and the country is stuck with a non-performing cadaver,” Bannon told Breitbart.
Biden dismissed calls to step aside to allow a younger Democratic Party nominee to take on Trump after a disastrous opening debate against the 45th President.
American voters consistently voice concerns about the 81-year-old’s competence but continue to give him better chances than other contenders, including Vice President Kamala Harris.
Bannon added: “Time to ratchet up the national security aspect of this - he’s unfit to be Commander-in-Chief - now or in January 2025.
“We need to know who is responsible for this cover-up. Clearly, European leaders are giving one embarrassing story after another.
“His numbers are low 40s - we can drive them to match his approval rating - 39 per cent.”
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:Bannon served as chief executive officer in Trump’s 2016 campaign, latering joining the 45th President in the White House until August 2017.
The 70-year-old’s comments come as Democrat-supporting actor George Clooney urged Biden to stand down.
Clooney, who held a multi-million-dollar fundraiser for Biden a few weeks ago, wrote: "I love Joe Biden. As a Senator. As a Vice President and as President. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him.
"Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced.
"But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big f*****g deal' Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate."
Clooney, who is "terrified" by a second Donald Trump term amid his recent "revenge tour", concluded: "Would it be messy? Yes. Democracy is messy. But would it enliven our party and wake up voters who, long before the June debate, had already checked out?
"It sure would. The short ramp to Election Day would be a benefit for us, not a danger. It would give us the chance to showcase the future without so much opposition research and negative campaigning that comes with these ridiculously long and expensive election seasons.
"This can be an exciting time for democracy, as we’ve just seen with the 200 or so French candidates who stepped aside and put their personal ambitions on hold to save their democracy from the far right. Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024."
