The latest polling saw Biden scoring higher on honesty, forgetfulness and the appearance of being elderly

Republicans are expected to weaponise Joe Biden's vulnerabilities as the party set out to focus on the president's age and memory.

Ahead of the election, the Republican Party plan to stage hearings in Congress to question Biden's mental abilities.

Merrick Garland, the Attorney-General, faces calls to release recordings of Biden’s interview with Robert Hur, the special counsel who described the President’s "diminished faculties in advancing age" in a report last week.

The Republican's impeachment inquiry is set to develop its focus from his son Hunter’s business dealings to include the president’s fitness for office, Axios reported.

According to the latest polling, Donald Trump has higher ratings from voters on a number of key personality traits, which includes competence, mental fitness and being a bully.

Whereas Biden scored higher on honesty, forgetfulness and the appearance of being elderly.

Calling for the recordings of Biden’s interview to be released, three House committee chairs wrote: "The oversight committee has sought information regarding President Biden’s mishandling of classified information in relation to its ongoing investigation into his participation in his family’s international business dealings in, among other places, China and Ukraine."

The report said documents on China and Ukraine were found in Biden’s office in Washington, they added.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"For our investigatory purposes, the committees require certain records relating to Mr Hur’s investigation and report. Given the seriousness of these matters, the committees are prepared to compel the production of this material if necessary."

Around 86 per cent of Americans think Biden is too old to serve another four-year term in the White House, an ABC News/Ipsos poll found.

It has also been reported that Hur will face pressure to testify about his decision not to charge Biden for keeping secret documents and his assessment that no jury would convict "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory".

The White House previously said Hur’s comments on the President’s memory were "gratuitous" and "inappropriate".

Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, said House Republicans "continue to waste their time" and were "not being serious" in pursuing the issue.

Biden "believes he did the right thing" after calling a press conference following the release of the report, according to the White House.

"It was the president’s idea … the president’s going to stand and defend himself," Jean-Pierre said.
