The US President sat down for a one-on-one interview with NBC show 'Late Night with Seth Meyers'

Joe Biden has snapped back at criticism about his age, by arguing that Trump is "as old as I am".

The US President took part in a rare one-on-one interview with NBC show 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' last night.

During the interview he was asked how he addressed concerns about his age and suitability for a second four-year term.

Biden, who is 81 and the oldest President in American history, is four years older than Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

Biden joked that the information about his age is "classified", before replying: "Take a look at the other guy, he's about as old as I am.

"It's about how old your ideas are. I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back. He wants to take us back on Roe v. Wade."

Trump is reportedly backing the idea of a national ban on abortion after 16 weeks of pregnancy, a policy that Biden and the Democrats as a whole oppose.

The Potus even joked that Trump "can't remember his wife's name" in a reference to his predecessor's visit to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

During a speech at the conference last weekend, Trump praised his wife Melania while also referencing a "Mercedes".

That prompted lots of confusion on social media, with some users explaining the former President's comments as referring to Mercedes Schlapp - his former aide who helps run CPAC.

Biden continued his criticism of Trump by slamming his presumptive opponent for suggesting that he would encourage Vladimir Putin to attack Nato countries that did not meet their financial commitments of two per cent of their GDP.

He also criticised Trump for praising those who took part in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, and for pledging to pardon those involved.

He said: "That's what happens in Eastern European countries. That's not what happens in America."

Meyers' question to Biden about his age comes off the back of frequent criticism by Republicans for his advancing years and his list of gaffes, most recently mixing up China and Russia in a speech.

Biden was giving a speech at the Annual National Governors’ Association when he slipped up as he recalled an anecdote from his time as Vice President to Barack Obama.

Addressing the elected representatives in the room, Biden said that Obama had warned him of the need to get close to Jinping because he would one day be in charge of Russia.

"He wanted me to get to know Xi Jinping," the President recalled.

"It was clear he was going to be the head of Russia... uuuh China... and we were having problems with Russia at the time and other countries as well."
