Musk has been under scrutiny for making a confusing gesture at US President Donald Trump’s inauguration

Elon Musk made an appearance at Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) election campaign event, saying "children should not be guilty of their grandparent's past".

Musk appeared via video link at the event in Halle, eastern Germany on Saturday to show his support for the party.

Speaking to a room of 4,500 people alongside the party’s co-leader Alice Weidel, Musk stressed the importance of protecting the German people and preserving German culture.

He said: “It’s good to be proud of German culture, German values, and not to lose that in some sort of multiculturalism that dilutes everything.”

The billionaire added that “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great grandparents.”

He also claimed there was too much focus on past guilt, apparently referring to Germany’s Nazi past.

In support of voting for the far-right party, Musk added: “I’m very excited for the AfD, I think you’re really the best hope for Germany’s fight for a great future for Germany.”

Weidel thanked the Tesla mogul and called on supporters to make Germany great again - drawing comparisons to Donald Trump’s famous phrase.

Earlier this month, Musk hosted Weidel in an X interview, drawing criticism about potential election meddling.

Musk has previously attacked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for “suppression of speech” under Germany’s government.

Scholz in return said he did not support freedom of speech when used for extreme-right views.

Despite the freezing cold, German far-right campaigners took to the streets on Saturday, with around 100,000 people gathering around Berlin’s Brandenburg gate and up to 20,000 in Cologne.

Musk’s remarks at the election event come as he has been under scrutiny for making a confusing gesture at US President Donald Trump’s inauguration that many have compared to a Nazi salute.

In the strange move, Musk was seen saying: “I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” referring to Trump’s victory in the presidential election.

Then he slapped his hand on his chest and extended his arm straight out and up.

He then added: “My heart goes out to you,” and turned around to make a similar gesture facing the other way.
