Maryanne Trump Barry criticised her brother in 2018, suggesting he just wanted to 'appeal to his base'

Donald Trump's sister Maryanne Trump Barry has died at the age of 86.

She was found in her Upper East Side apartment at around 4am on Monday morning.

Barry was pronounced dead at the scene after being located in her bedroom.

Medical experts will continue to determine her cause of death.

However, examiners stressed there were no signs of trauma.

The 86-year-old had a coveted legal career, holding top judicial positions under both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Barry became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey in 1974, becoming one of only two women out of more than 60 lawyers in the office.

The 45th President's sister, who was the eldest of Frederick Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod's five children, retired from her position as a federal judge in 2019 after an investigation into tax fraud.

The probe was launched following reports that the Trump siblings were participating in tax schemes to maximise their inheritances.

It had been alleged that the Trumps were receiving millions in untaxed gifts from their father and avoiding a 55 per cent tax on gifts over a certain value.

The investigation was immediately dropped as a result of her retirement.

Barry tended to steer clear from commenting about her younger brother.

However, she was usually supportive of his business endeavours.

Despite tending to back her brother, Barry was caught in 2018 saying he has "no principles" and blasting his "goddamn tweets and lying".

An audio recording, obtained by the Washington Post and recorded by Trump's niece Mary, also showed Barry adding: "All he wants to do is appeal to his base.

"He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this."

She also dismissed Trump's intelligence by saying "he doesn't read" and cited some of his only accomplishments as his "five bankruptcies".

The pair were reportedly mending their relationship just a few months ago when Barry met her brother at his Bedminster golf course this summer.

Three of the former president's four siblings have now died.

Robert Trump, the youngest of Frederick and Mary Anne's children, died in August 2020 at the age of 71.

Fred Trump Jr passed away in 1981 at the age of just 42 after suffering from a heart attack.
