Thomas Matthew Crooks was 'neutralised' after opening fire at Donald Trump's rally at 6.13pm yesterday
The gunman who wreaked havoc at Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania last night had "explosive devices" in his car, sources close to the investigation have claimed.
Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was "neutralised" by Secret Service agents after blood streamed from Trump's ear in Butler.
An audience member at the Trump rally was killed, with another two people sustaining serious injuries.
The Wall Street Journal has revealed that the car driven by Crooks, which was parked near the rally on Saturday evening, was carrying explosive devices.
Crooks reportedly obtained a firearm after it was purchased by his father but it is not yet known how he managed to access the adjacent building to take fire at the ex-President.
Police received multiple reports of suspicious packages in the surrounding area.
Bomb technicians were dispatched to search the abandoned vehicle.
Officials were working to ensure the scene was clear well into the night before searching Crooks’ family home.
Crooks was lying prone on the roof of a building around 150 metres from where Trump was addressing supporters.
US LATEST:The 20-year-old fired multiple rounds from a nearby rooftop before a Secret Service sniper shot him dead.
Crooks, who was a registered Republican but made a $15 donation to a progressive political action committee, was situated outside the area secured by the Secret Service ahead of the rally.
Video footage taken from near Butler Park Showgrounds appears to show a man with a matching description clutching an “AR-style rifle”.
Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen Crooks on the roof of a one-storey building to the right of the stage where Trump was speaking.
Crooks was identified by the FBI via DNA after his body was found without any identification.
The motive behind Crooks’ attempted assassination of the ex-President remains unknown.
“The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania,” a statement from the FBI said.
The FBI added: “This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online.”
