The shooter has been identified by the FBI and is confirmed dead

The horrifying moment of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump has been captured in a series of dramatic images.

Trump, 78, appeared to clutch his face as shots rang out at his rally in Pennsylvania.

The former President ducked to the floor and was quickly surrounded by secret service agents when the gunman opened fire at around 6.13pm.

He was just 10 minutes into his speech in Butler when the event was interrupted by gunshots.

As he left the podium surrounded by Secret Service agents, he stopped to raise a fist as blood could be seen splattered across his face from his ear.

Trump was taking aim at Joe Biden over southern border crossings before the shooting and left the scene in a motorcade.
