Sir Keir Starmer separarely condemned last night's shooting as 'shocking'

Sir Keir Starmer has spoken to Donald Trump after last night's "appalling" assassination attempt against the ex-President.

The Prime Minister, who released a statement condemning yesterday's shooting in Pennsylvania, called the 45th President this afternoon.

Starmer expressed his condolences for the victims and their families.

He also condemned the violence before wishing Trump and the other casualties a quick recovery.

Corey Comperatore was hailed a "hero" by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro following his confirmed death.

Another two people are being treated for serious injuries.

However, Starmer's call with Trump comes just hours after the Prime Minister publicly spoke out against the violence seen in Butler.

“I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes," Starmer said.

“Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.”

Starmer and Trump might soon have to have even more phone calls, with opinion polls suggesting the ex-President could return to the White House after November 5.

However, the Prime Minister is also keen to stress his desire to work with either Trump or Joe Biden.

During this week's Nato summit in Washington, Starmer said: “I was with him [Biden] on a bilateral for what was going to be 45 minutes, it ended up being the best part of an hour.

“We went through a number of issues at pace, strategic issues that we were keen to thrash out and talk through.

“He was on very good form and I was very pleased to talk through those issues with him.”

Biden later hit the headlines after mixing up Volodymyr Zelensky with Vladimir Putin and confusing Donald Trump with Kamala Harris.

Following Trump's hush money conviction, Starmer also stressed Labour would work with the Republican nominee if he returns to the White House.

He said: “Ultimately, whether he’s elected president will be a matter for the American people and, obviously, if we’re privileged to come in to serve, we would work with whoever they choose as their president.

“But there’s no getting away from the fact this is a wholly unprecedented situation.”

Starmer was joined by leaders around the world in condemning the attack committed by 20-year-old gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Ex-Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson joined the Labour leader in speaking out about the attack.
