Suella Braverman has issued a stark warning to Rishi Sunak over the Government's new Rwanda legislation, telling him that "time is running out" to change course on the issue.

The former Home Secretary was speaking just hours after the party was plunged into chaos last night, with the shock resignation of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.

He stepped down with immediate effect minutes after James Cleverly presented the new plan for migration to the Commons.

Speaking the following morning, Braverman said: "Sunak gave me firm assurances, personal and after extensive discussion, that he would stick to my plan. Ultimately he blocked that plan.

"I very much hope that the Prime Minister changes course."

She added: "There is still time to change this bill, its just been introduced. There is time to change course, I very much urge him to encourage a receptive attitude to those changes."

Asked what will happen if those changes are not implemented, Braverman told the BBC: "Ultimately this bill will fail. We've put two acts of parliament through already. We've done huge amounts of work to stop this problem.

"Time is running out and we cannot afford to put forward another bill that will fail."

The former home secretary, who has been highly critical of the Prime Minister, claimed: “I want the Prime Minister to succeed in stopping the boats."

She added: “He said he would do whatever it takes. I’m telling him there is a way to succeed in stopping the boats and fulfilling that promise.

“If we do it, if he does it as Prime Minister, he will be able to lead us into the next election telling the people we have succeeded on this very important pledge.”

Yesterday, Braverman warned that the Government's new Rwanda Bill is "fatally flawed".

The Government published legislation yesterday evening to address the concerns of the Supreme Court when they ruled that the Rwanda Plan is illegal.

The new Bill says the UK parliament "is sovereign", noting that "the validity of an Act is unaffected by international law" - noting that the European Convention on Human Rights and other international law would be disapplied.

But a source close to the former Home Secretary warned that the legislation will allow "every single illegal migrant to make individual human rights claims", saying it is a "further betrayal of Tory voters".

The source said: "This bill doesn’t come close to meeting Suella’s tests.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"The PM has kept the ability for every single illegal migrant to make individual human rights claims against their removal and to then appeal those claims if they don’t succeed. It is fatally flawed.

"It will be bogged down in the courts for months…. It won’t stop the boats.

"It is a further betrayal of Tory voters and the decent patriotic majority who want to see this insanity brought to an end."
