The Labour Party won the general election by a landslide last week and scrapped the Rwanda scheme, just one day after coming to office

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman has fumed over Labour's choice to scrap the Rwanda plan.

This comes after The Labour Party won the general election by a landslide last week and scrapped the Rwanda scheme just one day after coming to office.

Starmer said the scheme has "always been dead and buried", adding: "I'm not prepared to continue with gimmicks that don't act as a deterrent".

Speaking to GB News, she said: "I've been very clear about how we deal with the problem of illegal migration. People who come to the country illegally on the Channel, they've got no right to be here.

"We need to ensure that we have a system. Unfortunately, it will not happen now under Labour. And I tried valiantly with Rishi and it didn't happen.

"We needed to deliver a system which meant that as soon as possible after they arrived in the UK, they would have been removed, not weeks or months, relocated to a safe country like Rwanda.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

"That's why the concept of Rwanda was the right one. It's a real shame that Labour has scrapped it instantly, automatically.

"You know they don't have any other alternative to fix this problem. Rwanda was a willing partner.

"I've been to Rwanda on several occasions to safe, humane countries. It would have been.

"It's already resettled and welcomed 100,000 refugees and vulnerable people to allow them to live a safe and secure life there."

"That's the way we solve the issue of illegal migration, and it's a grave shame that we didn't succeed at doing it, and I'm afraid we will only see the problem get worse under Labour."

The Labour Party said before last Thursday's general election that it would ditch the scheme.

The Tories said it would deter huge numbers of migrants trying to get across the Channel to the UK on small boats from northern France.

The Labour leader pledged to create a new 'UK border force' to replace the scheme.

The new border security commander may earn "more than Starmer", according to reports, with a reported salary of £200,000.

Earning more than £30,000 above Starmer's maximum annual salary, the new Border Security Command will collectively use officers from the National Crime Agency, Border Force and MI5 to smash the people smuggling gangs.
