Nat Con descended into chaos after police in Brussels ordered it to be shut down, sparking outrage from speakers and guests alike

Nigel Farage has hit out at "cancel culture", claiming that Brussels has "got even worse" since Brexit after local police ordered a right-wing conference in Brussels to be shut down.

Speaking on stage at the National Conservatism Conference, the former MEP described the situation as "monstrous".

It descended into chaos earlier today after police in Brussels ordered it to be shut down, sparking outrage from speakers and guests alike.

Reacting, Farage said: "The last time I was officially in Brussels was on January 30 2020, it was the day before we were due to leave the EU and I waved my flag in the parliament.

"They cut the microphone off because alternative views have never been particularly welcome here.

"This is my first official visit back and I'd like to say that it's really good to be back in Brussels and that things have improved but clearly they've actually got rather worse.

"What has happened over the course of the last 48 hours is simply monstrous.

"This is National Conservatism. There are people coming on this platform over the course of the next two days representing political parties that will top the polls in their country in the European elections of June this year."

Farage, as he extended his speech to start taking questions from the audience, said: "I've heard the police are very eager to close us down, so they can close it down with me on stage."

He hit out at what he called the "extreme intolerance" of authorities in interviews after his speech, asking: "What will this look like around the world?"

Writing on social media after the event, the former Reform UK leader added: "What just happened in Brussels this afternoon was a disgrace.

"For the Mayor and police to shut down a peaceful political event makes me more convinced of Brexit than ever."

He said it "comes as no surprise" that the Brussels authorities had "done their best" to stop the conference from taking place.

Farage added: "Cancel culture, alive and well".

Addressing the same conference, former Home Secretary Suella Braverman took a swipe at Rishi Sunak, claiming he lacks the "political will to take on the European Court of Human Rights".

She accused Strasbourg of overruling the "will of the people" by preventing flights to Rwanda from taking off.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The MP for Fareham said the current Government hasn't "laid the groundwork" to quit the ECHR - despite Sunak suggesting he is willing to do so.

She added: "It’s no surprise that recent noises in this direction are easily dismissed as inauthentic."
