The Runcorn & Helsby MP Mike Amesbury yesterday confirmed he reported an assault to Cheshire Police

A Labour MP who claimed he felt "threatened" in an altercation with a constituent yesterday landed a sucker-punch before beating him six times, CCTV footage has revealed.

Mike Amesbury, who was first elected to the House of Commons in 2017, landed several blows during an incident at 2.15am on Saturday morning.

The Runcorn & Helsby MP appeared to throw the punches without physical provocation, footage obtained by MailOnline has suggested.

Amesbury, 55, who previously served as Shadow Housing Minister under Sir Keir Starmer, was locked in conversation with the man before suddenly knocking him to the ground with a left hook to the head.

The incident sparked commotion from nearby revellers, with one shouting "stop it" and another asking "why are they fighting?"

In separate footage showing the aftermath of the incident, Amesbury pointed his finger at the floored man in a fiery tirade.

During the heated exchange, the 55-year-old said: "You won't ever threaten your MP ever again, will you?"

A bystander was heard accusing the Runcover & Helsby MP of "smacking" a constituent to the floor.

Cheshire Police yesterday confirmed it received a report of an alleged assault in the early hours of this morning.

A spokesman for the force said: "At 2.48am on Saturday, October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing."

However, Cheshire Police was unable to offer any further update.

Amesbury, who retained his seat with a 14,696 vote lead over Reform UK, also decided to address the incident yesterday.

“This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

"I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn & Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

A Labour Party spokesperson yesterday added: “We are aware of an incident that took place last night involving Mike Amesbury MP

"We understand that Mr Amesbury approached Cheshire Police to report what happened this morning himself, and that he will cooperate with any inquiries they have.”

Just hours before the incident, Amesbury was attending a meeting alongside the Cheshire Police & Crime Commissioner Dan Price.

Local Frodsham Labour councillors were also in attendance as the group listened to concerns from residents about policing and community safety.
