Three migrants died in the Channel after an incident on Sunday morning

GB News host Nana Akua delivered a scathing critique of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's approach to tackling the migrant crisis, claiming she is "sick" of seeing those attempting to cross the Channel lose their lives.

Three migrants died in the Channel after an incident off the coast of Sangatte, near Calais, where 45 people were rescued while attempting to board a small boat bound for the UK.

The Government has blamed "ruthless criminals" for the deaths, which occurred on Sunday morning.

Border security and asylum minister Dame Angela Eagle said: "This morning lives have been lost at sea because ruthless criminals running the small boat trade are overloading people into unseaworthy vessels."

Hitting out at the Labour Government, Nana told GB News: "I'm absolutely sick of this, I don't know why they haven't got a handle on it. It seems pretty obvious to me, if I were in charge, those boats would be stopped."

The presenter argued for decisive action, including potentially leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) if necessary to prevent further deaths.

She added: "If it would require me to get out the ECHR, then I would do that if it meant that would happen, because people are dying. What is the solution? Would Rwanda have worked and should we be leaving the ECHR?"

The GB News host criticised both British and French authorities for their handling of the situation, noting that France is now experiencing direct consequences as migrants specifically target their shores for Channel crossings.

"They're all talking nonsense, nobody's actually done anything. I actually miss Rishi Sunak now," Nana admitted.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

In agreement with Nana, Deputy Editor of Spiked Fraser Myers also criticised Labour leader Keir Starmer's approach to tackling the migrant crisis.

"Starmer's policy is to smash the gangs, but it looks like the gangs are smashing Starmer unfortunately," Myers told GB News.

He argued that while law enforcement is important, current policies fail to address the underlying incentives for illegal crossings.

"Unfortunately tragedies like this happen because people know that if they come to Britain, there is next to zero chance of them being deported," Myers said.

He suggested that Labour's approach oversimplifies the issue by focusing solely on smuggling gangs.

"Many people are genuine asylum seekers and refugees, but a big percentage of them are not, and essentially they treat everyone as that," Myers added.

The French Prefet Maritime for the Channel and the North Sea confirmed the deaths on Sunday, adding that four other people had been taken to hospital with hypothermia.

The incident follows four days of crossings that saw a total of 1,485 people make the journey – the busiest Christmas period since records began in 2018.
