A Labour government will not commit to cutting taxes until the economy grows and they are affordable, Sir Keir Starmer has told GB News.
The frontrunner to be the next Prime Minister was unveiling six "first steps" of a new Labour government if the party wins the next general election.
However tax cuts were not explicitly promised in the top lines of the six steps, instead including a reference in the first step - to "deliver economic stability, with tough spending rules, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible".
In an interview with GB News, Starmer made clear that voters would have to wait for sustained economic growth before taxes can start to come down.
He said: "I want the burden on working people as far as taxes are concerned to be as low as possible. I won't shy away from that.
"But I do know that we have to grow the economy to ensure that living standards across the country improve, which is so desperately needed."
He added: "Wherever we have said we will raise taxes, we've set out what we will raise and what we'll spend the money on.
"So what you did hear this morning is that we're going to get rid of the tax break for private schools and use that money for the teachers we need in our state secondary schools.
"What you did hear is we're going to get rid of the 'non-dom' status properly and use that money towards reducing waiting lists."
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is expected to cut taxes in a second fiscal statement in September to allow the Conservative leader Rishi Sunak to fight the next general election on a tax cutting agenda.
