GB News presenter and former Business Secretary Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg called on Rishi Sunak to “reunite the right”, suggesting he offer an electoral pact to Reform UK and bring Nigel Farage into government as a Conservative MP.
Speaking on his 8pm GB News programme, State of the Nation, the former Cabinet minister said: “The next election poses fundamental questions for my party. But it all comes down to one question - what does it mean to be a conservative?... The answer lies in reuniting the right.
“What we need is a big, open and comprehensive offer to those in Reform… the Prime Minister should offer candidate selection to senior members of the Reform Party, such as the estimable Ben Habib, Richard Tice, and of course, the one and only Nigel Farage.
“With the help of Nigel Farage in a Conservative government, with Boris Johnson probably returning as Foreign Secretary, and welcoming the likes of Ben Habib and Richard Tice into the Conservative Party, as well as pursuing genuinely conservative policies, winning the next election is well within reach.”
Rees-Mogg’s suggestion of an electoral pact comes amidst new polling that showed if Nigel Farage were to re-enter politics, Reform would see 16 per cent of the vote with Conservatives and Labour polling at 21 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.
Rees-Mogg said “Whilst combining these percentages together takes us to 37 per cent to Labour’s 41 per cent, it doesn’t take into account the fact that it would send a message to the electorate.”
“The message is - we have answered the question of what it means to be conservative.
“Conservatism means slashing net migration… stopping the small boats… leaving the ECHR… rolling back net zero… building more homes… and unleashing Britain’s latent growth.
“That is what voting for a Conservative Government would mean at the next election if we manage this great offer.”
Nigel Farage appeared on Patrick Christys Tonight last night, shortly after Rees-Mogg's remarks, and said: “It is an extraordinary thing to say, but Jacob should play a bit of Supertramp. Their top track is called Dreamer and it's just not going to happen because Rishi is not bold, he has no leadership whatsoever.
“The truth is that the vast majority of Conservative MP's are Social Democrat, One Nation careerists. They have no courage, they have no vision. This will not happen, even though Jacob thinks it is a frightfully good idea.”
