Emily Maitlis called the Republican National Conference "cultish" on The News Agents podcast

Emily Maitlis appeared on The News Agents podcast with Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall to discuss the Republican National Conference.

During the broadcast, she called the conversations in the hall "utterly dystopian" and the conference "cultish."

At another point, the former BBC presenter accused speakers at the event of "spouting garbage."

The 2024 Republican National Convention, currently being held in Milwaukee, sees thousands of supporters come and watch leading figures of the Republican Party and celebrities speak.

Speaking on Britain's Newsroom Bev Turner said: "It just showed for me the way the political and broadcast left are sneering at that event. It is the distinction between those people who are out of touch with the people that J.D. Vance appeals to."

She continued: "It's just not the little Westminster elite. It's not Emily Maitlis' little dinner party set who like to walk around art gallery openings on a Wednesday night in Westminster.

"It's just not those people. And that's okay. And when you hear broadcasters like that just be so detached. I'm just glad we have us."

Ben Leo added: "Instead of sneering at these people. Why don't you try and work out why this momentum is building."

Speaking on The News Agents, Maitlis said: "The conversations in this hall are utterly dystopian.

"I used to think that they were kind of turning it on and trying to spin this to the media. But I think something has actually happened. I think it has become more cultish.

"I genuinely think the people who are spouting this garbage are starting to believe what they're saying."

Users on X commented on Maitlis' comments with one stating: "What is this sneering, diatribe? Appalling."

"She is herself lost, in her media bubble," another argued.

In a separate interview with Nigel Farage at the conference, Maitlis asked the Reform UK leader why he had left Clacton for the US just two weeks after being elected as MP in that area.

Farage insisted he "had to come" to Milwaukee in the wake of the assassination attempt of Donald Trump who he had been "friendly with" for years.

Maitlis asked Farage why Trump was having a tough time to which he bluntly replied: "He nearly died."

After a painful silence, Maitlis asked him the question again to which Farage repeated that the former president nearly died.

Commenting on the interview on X, one user said: "Pathetic. I wouldn't speak to them at all."

Another said: "Emily is a master of gotcha journalism."

"Her questions were simply embarrassing. Your answers were pure class," another user penned.
