Jonathan Gullis dismissed the broadcaster as being 'out of touch', accusing Davie of having brought 'shame upon this institution'

Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis has blasted the BBC for its refusal to label Hamas a terrorist organisation, calling for the licence fee to be scrapped.

The MP made the comments to GB News after Director General Tim Davie faced a grilling from Conservative backbenchers last night at a meeting of the 1922 Committee in parliament.

Gullis dismissed the broadcaster as being "out of touch", accusing Davie of having brought "shame upon this institution".

He said that while people "did respect the fact that he actually turned up", the MP dismissed his responses as "tone deaf".

Tory Deputy Chairman Lee Anderson walked out of last night's meeting saying Davie “clearly doesn’t spend much time watching the BBC", while Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick told the Sun he had "never been so disappointed."

The back and forth with Davie was described by one minister as being "frosty".

Speaking after the meeting, Gullis told GB News: "I think a lot of us there who were left flabbergasted.

"What shocked me more than anything was the Director General argued back with colleagues and said that he would not agree with describing Hamas as terrorists because he was worried about how it might hurt the feelings of some people.

"Now to me this is mind boggling. Everyone knows that Hamas is a terrorist organization.

"It's a prescribed terrorist organization here in this country.

"Every other news agency like the great GB News also considers this to be a terrorist organization.

"Even the Palestinian Authority, the PLO, understand that Hamas are not represented in the Palestinian people and are a terrorist organization.

"So what on earth the Director General thinks is going on, I don't know."

Gullis added: "He is so far out of touch with the people of this great country and particularly the Jewish community, not just here but around the world.

"He's brought shame upon this institution and has made the case why might now more than ever the British taxpayer should have to continue paying the telly tax."

The BBC previously refused to describe Hamas as a terror organisation, instead using the term "militant group". But last week they adjusted their position, choosing to describe it as "a terrorist group proscribed by the UK government".

Defending the BBC's decision not to directly describe Hamas as a terror group, a spokesperson for the broadcaster said: "The BBC's position is that when we use the word, we ascribe it to whoever's characterised them in that way.

"So we make clear that the government has said that about Hamas. That's what we do.

"The reason why the BBC doesn't make the judgment is that it's not for us as a news organisation to ascribe any organisation as anything."
