Driver caught red-handed by police after speeding 100mph on A1(M)

A driver has been caught travelling at speeds of nearly 100mph on the A1(M) motorway, police have said.

The incident occurred near Leeming during routine police patrols, where officers spotted the motorist exceeding 90mph on the A-road.


The speeding violation was one of several incidents dealt with by North Yorkshire Police on Tuesday, November 5.


Officers were conducting their regular patrols when they detected the high-speed offence.

The force wrote: "As various fireworks displays were lighting up the skies across North Yorkshire last night, our roads policing officers were joined by the operational support unit and police dog units for another team night shift.

"The team were tasked with targeting burglary as well as serious and organised crime.

"After briefing, our officers strategically headed to various points across the county to intercept travelling criminality.

"What followed was a night of vehicle stops, responding to 999 calls and various suspicious incidents which led to a pursuit, arrests and the recovery of property.

"8pm - Officers were travelling on the A1 northbound when they spotted a vehicle which was travelling in excess of 90 mph near Leeming.

"The driver was reported and dealt with via a Traffic Offence Report."

North Yorkshire Police warned that criminal activity, including speeding offences, would be dealt with using the strongest possible measures.

Continuing to detail other incidents that occurred last night, the force wrote: "11.50pm - Two vehicles were seen in suspicious circumstances near Stokesley, one of them was a Land Rover which made off down a farm track.

"Officers stopped the other vehicle, but checks revealed that the drivers were local, and all documentation was in order.

00.23am - A member of the public contacted our force control room to report a possible burglary in progress in Langthorpe near Boroughbridge.

"We immediately dispatched multiple units and our officers confirmed that a vets practice had been broken into.

"A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary, he currently remains in police custody.

"02.28am - We sighted a vehicle driving at speed near Scarborough.

"Officers attempted to stop it, but it made off from us.

"We quickly followed and picked it up on the A170 before a further unit stung the vehicle and two suspects ran away.

"Following extensive searches, both suspects were located.

"A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for the police, dangerous driving and theft of a motor vehicle.

"An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving with no license, dangerous driving, driving with no insurance and drug driving."

Superintendent Andrew Berriman from North Yorkshire Police's Specialist Operations Unit outlined the force's strategic approach to community safety.

Berriman emphasised the force's unwavering commitment to tackling crime across the region.

"Our approach is to be relentless, and we will continue to deploy across the county around the clock to intercept criminality," he added.
