TikTok have been urged to remove 'potentially life threatening' content

TikTok has been issued with a warning over "indications" that it is being used to "disseminate illegal content" after Hamas launched its attack on Israel.

Commissioner Thierry Breton has given the social media platform 24 hours to respond as they warn that content must get "immediate attention".

It comes after thousands of Israelis and Palestinians have been killed and injured in the conflict.

Breton's warning in a letter to TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew follows similar letters to X owner Elon Musk and Meta Platforms' Mark Zuckerberg earlier this week.

The EU industry commissioner said rules on content moderation were clear in the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) and spelt out certain obligations in his letter.

The new DSA requires large online platforms to ensure illegal content is removed and measures are taken to tackle the risks to public security.

The coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict on social media platforms has also come under scrutiny from the UK government, with X and Meta urged to deal with a surge in violent and misleading content on their sites.

Technology secretary, Michelle Donelan called a meeting to demand the removal from their platforms.

Donelan said: “I had a practical conversation with platforms on how they can and must do more to stop supporters of Hamas pushing wicked terrorism and antisemitism to the world.

"I’ve asked them to follow up and detail the plans they have in writing."

Breton, also reinforced the new EU laws with Meta after issuing a warning to X on the same matter.

On Tuesday, Breton told Musk his platform was “being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU”.

He added: “I therefore invite you to urgently ensure that your systems are effective, and report on the crisis measures taken to my team.”

The commissioner also suggested police agencies had been in touch with X over its content, adding he expected Musk “to be in contact with the relevant law enforcement authorities and Europol” and to “ensure that you respond promptly to their requests”.

Musk replied on X, asking Breton to “list the violations you allude to on X, so that the public can see them”.
