Locals in the seaside town have accused the council of ‘neglecting’ the issue

Locals from a seaside town have demanded their council stop the wind from “blowing sand everywhere” and to manage the problem more effectively.

Two former hoteliers from Llandudno have claimed sand dunes from the West Shore beach in Conwy are causing havoc on the local town.

Taking their issue to the local council at Bodlondeb, Brenda Irving and Barbara Sandbach, members of the Friends of the West Shore Facebook group, told the council that the issue was being poorly managed.

“We do feel very strongly about this problem, having spoken to numerous visitors and locals and residential people who live beside the West Parade, plus regular visitors who just love the West Shore, the views, the mountains, sea, and magnificent sunsets,” Irving said.

“The neglect of many areas is now very evident.

“Please do not let this get worse. Windblown sand is blocking waterways, walkways, paths either side of the sea wall.

“The paths off the seaside wall are unpassable for many users. It is impossible for families with prams, people in wheelchairs, many walkers using walking aids; all these, of course, like to be near the sea and the sands.

“Windblown sand is now prominent in all areas of the promenade, settling underfoot of almost all the benches where weeds are growing permanently in the sand where dogs urinate, making unhealthy smelling seating unattractive and neglected.

“People have spent money placing these memorial benches to respect their deceased loved ones.

“They all have a look of neglect. This surely needs attention quickly.”

Cllr Mike Priestley, who charied the meeting, replied: “My understanding at the moment – and officers may correct me – is that once the windblown sands are blown over the sea defence and onto the road, it is classed as detritus.

“So we can no longer just put that on the beach. We’d have to look at that as detritus and dispose of it in that way.”

According to the Friends of the West Shore Facebook page, the group is dedicated to tidying and helping improve amenities in the area.

Responding to the petition on the Friends of the West Shore group page, some locals found the issue completely ridiculous.

One said: “Sand blown onto the road and the sand blown over the section of coastal path in front of the golf course?

“I think this is just an unavoidable characteristic of sand!”

Another wrote: “Thousands were spent already for cyclists the past just for it to get hammered by the stormy seas and back to square one. It's called the force of nature. (sic)

“Holiday season is over anyway. STOP MOANING.”

A third wrote: “Waste of time. Sand will blow. Nothing new.”

A spokesperson for Conwy council said: “The petition has been forwarded to Council Officers who will be responding in due course.”
