The New Jersey school district believes the celebrations could cause offence

A school district in New Jersey has cancelled its Halloween celebrations in order to “promote diversity, equity, and inclusion”.

The South Orange-Maplewood School District (SOMSD) believes that the celebrations could be offensive to people from different backgrounds.

The cancellation means that all Halloween-related activities and costume-wearing have been prohibited during school hours.

The superintendent of the district sent a letter to families explaining the decision.

“As you know, SOMSD is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion meaningfully - not just saying the words but also promoting an inclusive school...

“Our aim is to build a consistent approach across the District as to how our schools observe and celebrate holidays and special events.

“Each year, questions arise from families, students, and staff about what SOMSD schools will be doing regarding Halloween.”

In the letter, Superintendent Dr. Ronald G. Taylor, asked: “Is promoting school-sponsored Halloween activities creating indirect and unintentional financial hardships for students and families?

“Do school-sponsored Halloween activities violate the dignity of some of our students and families, either culturally or religiously?

“Does the promotion of school-sponsored Halloween activities create tensions with the equity and access values of SOMSD?'”

Taylor asserted that whilst the decision would anger many, he believed the new policy would bring about equality between students.

He said that all 10 principals of the schools in the district were given a survey, asking whether Halloween celebrations should be discontinued.

“The responses from the principals were overwhelming in favour of discontinuing Halloween celebrations in school,” the letter said.

Taylor propositioned an alternative “Fall Festival” instead.

Dr Kevin Gilbert, Assistant Superintendent of Access and Equity, said: “All of us realize that this breaks with what the district has usually done, and that can be a difficult thing to do sometimes.

“Often, working to instil greater equity in our district begins with recognizing that we cannot do what we have always done. But with this decision, we are taking a step closer to upholding our community’s access and equity values.”

The governor of New Jersey, Democrat Phil Murphy, responded: “Seriously? We can't let kids celebrate Halloween? Give me a break.”
