A woke row has erupted on social media after schools were urged to ditch gendered language for school uniforms in a bid to appease gender-neutral students.

‘Uniform A’ and ‘Uniform B’ have been floated as gender-neutral terms to refer to schoolchildren’s uniforms instead of boys and girls.

Uniform policy documents in primary, secondary, sixth form colleges and private schools have amended their uniform descriptions so that their pupils wear clothes that “most reflect their self-identified gender”.

In most documents, it is understood that the terms “boy” and “girl” have been scrubbed entirely with some institutions going as far as to introduce a third uniform - ‘Option C’

Brighton College has been named as one of the schools using the new terms, according to the Times.

An analysis of 550 schools carried out by the Mail on Sunday found a majority have adopted gender-neutral policies.

Stevensons, a major provider of school uniforms, said back in 2019 that it would offer a gender-neutral option by default and no longer market uniforms to just boys or girls.

One school in Somerset is reported to be going ahead with A, B, and C uniform options.

Wellington, a private mixed boarding and day school, said the decision would allow pupils to make a “considered and thoughtful choice” about their own uniforms but made clear that “a combination of ABC is not allowed”.

Social media users reacted in disbelief over the proposals with one writing: “Brighton Council bans the term GIRL AND BOY they will only refer to their school uniforms as Uniform A and Uniform B now.

“What a complete and utter slag heap of rubbish.”

Another wrote: “The tartan trousers and the boys blazer shirt and tie would be better if that was the uniform. For all. Why do a choice?”(sic)

A third said: “Isn’t this all getting a little silly. Just call them trousers or skirts. The rest is the same for anyone whoever they identify as.”

One more said: “Clothes are literally just pieces of material. Our obsession with boys can only wear this/girls only this etc is nonsense.”

Another simply wrote: “This is ridiculous.”

“Schools are adding to the mental health problems of children who, after going into school, no longer know what gender they belong to,” Chris McGovern a retired head teacher and chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, told the Daily Mail.

“It’s time we had a Government with the backbone to intervene.”

Lucy Marsh, of the Family Education Trust, added: “It’s about time that parents got together to push back against this.”

Speaking on GB News, Annunziata Rees-Mogg slammed the idea as “absolutely abominable”.

“I actually called my 12-year-old to get her take on it,” Rees-Mogg said, “and she said ‘no, why do they keep trying to erase women?’”.
