Police have called the incident 'distressing' - but have ruled out 'suspicious circumstances'

One person is missing after a small boat capsized in the River Thames this morning, police have said.

The vessel, thought to have been carrying six people, tipped over into the water at Sunbury Lock, near Wheatleys Eyot in Walton-on-Thames - just outside London to the southwest.

Surrey Police has confirmed five of the people involved in the incident have been "safely located".

The force added that it, alongside the South East Coast Ambulance Service and Surrey Fire and Rescue, are involved in the search effort.

As of a little before 3pm on Friday, all three emergency services were still at the scene, and had been joined by coastguard and RNLI lifeboats.

A spokesman for the former said that HM Coastguard was called to assist Surrey Police Service with the incident and - that RNLI Teddington lifeboats were also called out to the scene.

Emergency services had initially been alerted at 8.50am - and amid a frantic search for the missing boater, police have said they will update the public as soon as they can.

At 3.20pm, police issued an update on the incident - and confirmed the missing person's age and sex.

Surrey Police said the vessel involved was a rowing boat carrying six adults.

But a statement from the force added that officers believe a man in his 60s may still be in the river.

Officers have informed his relatives and are keeping them updated while enquiries to establish the full circumstances of what occurred continue, police said.

The Chief Inspector for North Surrey, Andy Jenkins, said: "This is a very distressing time for all involved and we continue to support our partners in the search for the missing man.

"Our enquires to establish the exact circumstances of how the boat capsized remain underway but at this time we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances or third party involvement.

"We will look to share any further updates with you as and when we have them."
