Former boxer Tayyib Muqeem had to step in after the incident broke out in Stoke-on-Trent

A half naked man who claimed to be a Jedi attacked a woman with sticks and a rock in broad daylight.

Passers-by had to step in after the incident broke out outside Derby Street Pharmacy in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.

CCTV cameras had initially captured the man acting strongly before he dashed across the road on to the neighbouring car park. At one point he is seen climbing on top of a car at around 1.30pm on April 10.

However, he soon turned violent and tussled with a woman who was walking down the pavement. Two other people then intervene to help as the women ends up stricken on the ground.

Pharmacist Navid Kaleem, 43, told Stoke-on-TrentLive that he saw a man acting erratically outside acting like a "gorilla."

He said: "At around 1.30pm this afternoon a lady was repeatedly hit with a rock in the head in the Derby Street area.

"A male was acting erratically, topless jumping around suggestive of being under the influence. On our CCTV, we can see he's quite heavily built, and he was jumping up and down on cars. He was like a gorilla.

"The poor lady suffered serious head injuries lying in a pool of blood and was rushed to hospital. Her condition is currently unknown. It was just a random attack."

Former boxer Tayyib Muqeem, known locally as Mr T, stepped in as he was leaving the mosque nearby following Eid celebrations. Upon approaching the scene, he said he saw a man with his shirt off in the middle of the road waving two sticks, looking around.

The 53-year-old said: "He was speaking in an unusual way, saying ‘I am Jedi, I am God. I’m going to kill myself, I’m going to kill them’. He approached me and said 'Can I get in the car?'

"I drove into the car park, and as I did, he got a brick from somewhere. As I got out the car and walked towards him, he hit a woman in the head with a brick, and when I went over there I saw him on top of her hitting her with sticks.

"I didn’t touch him, or go anywhere near him, I just said ‘Stop! You’ve got to stop, you’re going to hurt her. Get away from her'. At that stage he focused on me. He stood up again, got the brick and threw it at me."

He added: "I caught the brick, thank God. I said, 'Calm down, you’ve just hurt a woman, everything is okay'. I said ‘The police have been called, they are on their way’. I don’t think he was in his right mind at all."

GB News has approached Staffordshire Police for a comment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at around 1.30pm to reports of an assault on Eastwood Road in Hanley.

"However, shortly after, we were stood down by police as we were no longer required on scene."
