The London Mayor buckled to pressure from Mick Lynch’s RMT as catastrophic strikes were called off at the eleventh hour

Sadiq Khan has been mulling over whether to hike tube prices to make up for lost revenue just days after coughing up £30million to the RMT.

The RMT called off its week-long walkout which threatened to cause carnage across the capital.

However, Khan could face further industrial action after rival union ASLEF felt aggrieved after only accepting a five per cent pay deal in November.

The London Mayor is now looking to fill Transport for London’s coffers, with post-pandemic blues cutting revenue.

Khan revealed he had “held meetings” with Transport for London chiefs about introducing peak fare prices during rush hour during the London Assembly’s Budget and Performance Committee on Wednesday.

The London Mayor, who is seeking his third term in City Hall in May, also said pay-as-you-go travel enabled TfL to “play around” with daily caps.

Khan claimed bringing in dynamic pricing was among “some of the options” TFL was looking at but that he had “not made a decision.”

Altering prices during rush hour times could see the cost of travel increase on select days of the week.

Peak pricing on London’s transport is already in place at the busiest times of the day, with fares on the Tube going up 10 per cent in Zone One during rush hour.

The announcement could come as another round of fare rises look set to hit commuters' pockets before March.

City Hall also confirmed a 5.9 per cent increase last year.

The potential price changes could come amid fears TFL is losing revenue due to the staggering rise in people working from home.

Data released last year by the Office for National Statistics revealed 19 per cent of Londoners now work exclusively from homes and around 40 per cent come into an office at least one day per week.

It was reported that only 12 per cent of adults across the UK reported working from home before the Coronavirus reached British shores in March 2020.

TFL’s own data also showed annual journeys made on either the bus or tube were well below pre-pandemic levels.

A price hike, which will put further pressure on Khan as Londoners continue to grapple with the cost of living crisis, comes after GB News revealed the Mayor racked up 80,000 air miles last year.
