Ryanair staff have been accused of specifically targeting passengers near the back of boarding queues

A pair of Ryanair passengers have revealed they were left "utterly miffed" after being issued a double fine for "oversized baggage" at the airport - despite their bags being the right size.

Mary O'Hanlon, from County Down, Northern Ireland, had been flying from Dublin to Lanzarote with her partner earlier this month when "stroppy" staff stepped in at the gate.

The couple were told their luggage - soft cabin bags from Aerolite - were too big for Ryanair's sizing rack, despite the bags being sold specifically to fit in.

Photos from the run-in with gate staff showed that the bags fit perfectly inside the rack, but the couple were then left "badly stung" when they were each ordered to pay a €75 (£63) fine.

O'Hanlon told GB News: "Our bags are the right measurements, they fit in their sizing racks - and we were at the end of the queue.

"We argued with one very stroppy lady who was not backing down. Pay up or you won't be going anywhere, we were told.

"We had no choice but to pay €75 each. Totally and utterly miffed with this - we have tried to contact Ryanair, who are saying: 'If your bags don't fit, you will have to pay!

"Our bags did fit! If they didn't, we would have no issue - but they did."

She told The People's Channel that she'd travelled "all over" with Ryanair using the same bags in the past, and had never been pulled up before.

After eventually paying the fine, O'Hanlon and her partner were then given yellow labels for their bags and were told to place them in a trolley on their way to the plane.

But she said she never found said trolley - and not only did nobody take notice of their labels when entering the aircraft, but their bags also fit soundly into the overhead lockers.

After their return from Lanzarote, where they had no issues boarding, the duo then lodged an official complaint with the airline - and have raised fears that Ryanair staff have been targeting passengers near the back of the boarding queue.

O'Hanlon also claimed that staff receive commission for exacting fines on flyers with oversized baggage - which Ryanair has outright denied.

"At this stage, we just want our €150 back - in cash, and not a voucher! We are badly stung by this.

"We have always travelled by Ryanair to different destinations with the same bags and never had an issue until now... Even when we came back from Lanzarote, there was no problem!"

A customer support email from Ryanair seen by GB News issued a standard message about baggage sizes and reminded the couple that their priority boarding would only allow them to bring a certain-sized bag - which O'Hanlon assured was the case.

The airline also sent back an email saying the issue had been resolved, she added.

"But it's not resolved - it's anything but! We both want our money back, and we're so done with Ryanair. We'll fly Aer Lingus next time - we're not letting it go," she vowed.

A Ryanair spokesman told GB News: "These passengers booked a priority fare for this flight from Dublin to Lanzarote (January 14), which allowed each of them to carry a small personal bag and a 10kg cabin bag onboard.

"As their cabin bags exceeded the permitted size, they were correctly charged a standard gate baggage fee (€75) by the gate agent at Dublin Airport to place their oversized bags in the hold."

But O'Hanlon hit back, saying: "I'm so bloody mad. Our bags ARE the right size - and we still took them on the plane back!"

GB News has approached Ryanair for further comment.
