The woman then used the man’s own walking stick to further assault him, hitting him repeatedly.
She then took his wallet, his shopping and his food, then fled the scene.
The 27-year-old pled guilty to all charges and was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
Minshull Street Crown Court was told that the 72-year-old man had been enjoying a day of shopping in Manchester City Centre before he proceeded to head home.
Arriving back in Rochdale, the pensioner bought two pizzas from a takeaway before taking a seat on a bench to enjoy his food at around midnight.
Prosecutor Maxwell Cope told the court: “He then saw a woman, this defendant, approach him and she demanded his pizza.
“The situation quickly escalated as she attempted to take the pizza with such force that it prompted a physical struggle. She repeatedly attacked the complainant, punching him in the face and causing him to fall to the ground.
“The defendant continued to punch and kick him repeatedly before using his walking stick as a weapon.”
A delivery driver passed by on his bike, who saw the incident and intervened.
He managed to successfully diffuse the situation before McDonnel escaped with the pensioner’s pizza, shopping, and wallet.

The 72-year-old is suspected to have been left with a broken nose, as well as numerous cuts and bruises.
The court was told by defence James Preece that the mother-of-three was remorseful for her actions.
He mentioned that McDonnell had long suffered from alcohol, had mental health issues, and had been homeless previously.
The judge said: “These were particularly mean offences against a vulnerable victim aged 72.
“He had been out shopping and when he returned he bought himself some takeaway food and sat down for a rest. At that point you approached him aggressively and demanded his pizza.
“When he tried to resist you, instead of going away, you engaged in a physical struggle with him that escalated to you punching him to the face before kicking him and hitting him with his own walking stick.”
