A cenotaph in Rochdale had its poppies removed and replaced with Palestinian flags as tensions grow over pro-Palestine protest on Remembrance Day.

Video footage shows a man returning the Remembrance wreaths on the war memorial and discarding Palestinian flags.

The man can be seen picking up wreaths dispersed across the floor and removing flags from the bottom of the cenotaph.

It comes amid fears a huge march could spark clashes on Saturday, November 11 across London.

The mass demonstration, which is expected to bring tens of thousands of people to the capital, has received criticism over recent days.

Campaign group Friends of Al Aqsa, co-organised with Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PCS), said that its route would be between Marble Arch and Battersea Park, expected to start at 12.45 - two hours after the minute of silence.

Rishi Sunak has said that there is a "clear and present risk" that the Cenotaph and other war memorials could be "desecrated" during the march on Armistice Day.

GB News' presenter Richard Tice has condemned the placement of Palestinian flags on the cenotaph in Rochdale.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Writing on social media, he said: "This video exemplifies why these antisemitic, hate filled, disrespectful marches must be banned on Armistice Day."

Another person said: "He's doing a better job than the authorities!! At least we know there are decent people in this country. Well done."

A third added: "It's saddening to see that Palestinian activists would choose to desecrate a memorial honouring fallen soldiers in order to make a political statement.

"While everyone has a right to peaceful protest, it's important to do so in a respectful and constructive way. It's commendable that the British man stepped in to honour the fallen soldiers and maintain the dignity of the memorial."

In London, the Metropolitan Police has vowed to use "all its powers" to stop disruption on Remembrance Day as officers guarded the Cenotaph over the weekend.

Yesterday, patriotic protesters and veterans stood near the memorial in Whitehall while a pro-Palestinian demonstration gathered a short walk away at Trafalgar Square.

The men held up signs reading "have some respect for your British heroes" while waving Union Jack flags and singing Rule Britannia.

A spokesman for Rochdale Borough Council said: "Having looked into the circumstances, we can confirm that wreaths blew over during the recent bad weather and have now been secured.

"The flags had been left by children who had been taking photographs on the monument."
