Phillip Schofield “welcomed” news of his brother’s conviction last month

Phillip Schofield’s brother Timothy has been jailed for 12 years at Bristol Crown Court after being found guilty of sexually abusing a child.

Timothy Schofield, 54, was convicted last month for 11 sexual offences involving a child.

The offences, which include two counts of sexual activity with a child, occurred between October 2016 and October 2019.

Timothy Schofield will also sign as a sex offender for life and is barred from working with children, vulnerable adults and for law enforcement.

Phillip Schofield’s younger brother, a former IT technician for Avon & Somerset Police, denied performing sexual acts on the teenager but admitted to watching pornography with him and masturbating while sitting apart.

During the sentencing hearing at Bristol Crown Court on Friday, Judge Mrs Justice Cutts said Timothy Schofield had "exploited his (the victim's) innocence... for your own sexual gratification".

She added: "It was wrong on every level for you to behave as you did.

"He felt forced to do what you wanted, trapped and unable to escape.

"He felt he couldn't tell anyone and did not do so for many years.

"You took away his ability to be the teenager he should have been - carefree, relaxed, happy."

Judge Cutts also commended the courage of the boy for reporting the abuse and criticised Timothy's Schofield's response of "self-pity" to the case.

She told the 54-year-old: "I have not heard a single word of remorse from you, only self-pity."

Following Timothy Schofield’s conviction, TV star sibling Phillip Schofield issued a statement and branded his brother’s actions as “despicable”.

The This Morning presenter said: “My overwhelming concern is and has always been for the wellbeing of the victim and his family.

"I hope that their privacy will now be respected.

“If any crime had ever been confessed to me by my brother, I would have acted immediately to protect the victim and their family.

“These are despicable crimes, and I welcome the guilty verdicts.

"As far as I am concerned, I no longer have a brother.”
