Rishi Sunak will meet Narendra Modi ahead of the G20 summit
India has been accused of “laughing” at Rishi Sunak with their plea to not be lectured on climate change.
The country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned Western nations against imposing “restrictive” climate change policies on the developing world as he prepares to host a critical G20 summit in Delhi.
Modi’s country is part of a cohort within the G20 to have opposed a proposal by Western countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 60 per cent by 2035.
India is joined by China and Saudi Arabia in opposition to the proposal.
Speaking on GB News, host Patrick Christys claimed Britain is being “laughed at” as it “clobbers” people with its drive to net zero.
“There’s a heck of a lot wrong with what is going on at the moment”, he said.

“So it appears that India is saying we will only deal with the climate crisis, if indeed this is a crisis, if you give us the money and help us.
“They’ve got a much bigger economy than us. I question this notion of ‘developing country’ as well.
“We are being clobbered with net zero Rudd in this country, meanwhile India and China are just going to crack on and it’s not going to make a blind bit of difference, is it?”
The upcoming summit is seen as a vital event in the bid to make progress on climate goals ahead of November’s Cop28 climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates.

PAModi has called on the West to be more “constructive” in how it goes about dealing with its concerns on the issue, arguing that tackling climate change should not be done at the expense of developing countries.
He wrote in The Times: “Many countries of the Global South are at various stages of development and climate action must be a complementary pursuit.
“Ambitions for climate action must be matched with actions on climate finance and transfer on technology.
“We believe there is a need to move away from a purely restrictive attitude of what should not be done, to a more constructive attitude focusing on what can be done to fight climate change.”
Responding to the comments, GB News presenter Christys stated that Modi is “laughing” at the UK.
Rishi Sunak will travel to India for his first trip to the country since becoming Prime Minister.
He is expected to meet Modi in Delhi ahead of the summit to discuss the prospects of a trade deal.
Modi is hopeful of showcasing India’s diplomatic endeavours at the summit, but has been met with a setback by Chinese President Xi Jinping announcing he will not be present.
