A Pakistani asylum seeker has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape of an 18-year-old woman in Nottinghamshire.

Sheraz Malik, 28, will go to prison for 10 years with four years on extended licence after he was found guilty of raping the teenager in Sutton-in-Ashfield last June.

Malik met the girl on Sutton Lawn, a park in Sutton-in-Ashfield on the evening of June 29, 2025.

The victim was introduced to him by a friend of Malik and a group of other older men.

She was initially raped by another member of the group, before being taken by the Pakistani national to a hidden area and she was subjected to a sexual assault for a second time, Birmingham Crown Court heard last year.

The convicted rapist was first identified after the initial suspect was arrested and he was later traced to an address in Newcastle, Nottinghamshire police have confirmed.

He was arrested on July 18, 2025, and gave no comment in his police interview, which included damning DNA evidence which linked him to the crime.

Before seeking asylum in the UK, Malik lived in Italy, Germany and France.

During the trial he claimed he had had consensual sex with the victim.

However, the jury rejected this version of events and in January found him guilty of two counts of rape.

Today, he appeared at Birmingham Crown Court again for sentencing and was handed 14 years - 10 of which in custody.

Detective Inspector Nicole Milner said: "This remains a complex and demanding investigation, and one that continues to be a priority for Nottinghamshire Police as we pursue our enquiries to locate and arrest a further suspect.
