The man being held in policy custody on suspicion of murdering three people in Nottingham on Tuesday used to be a student at the University of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire police have confirmed.
Detectives have also been granted 36 more hours to interrogate the suspect.
Two teenage Nottingham University students were among three killed in a horrific attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning with one man arrested on suspicion of murder.
GB News understands the 31-year-old suspect is a West African migrant with a history of violence.

The two 19-year-old students - Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar - were walking home from a nightclub near the University of Nottingham halls of residence when they were stabbed on Ilkeston Road.
The third victim, who was in his 60s and has been named as school caretaker Ian Coates, was found dead two miles away on Magdala Road.
In a vigil held at the university, Grace Kumar's father Sanjoy said: "The love that we have out there, I just wish we had it everywhere."
Sanjoy Kumar added: "Look after each other. Look after your friends. It's so important. Grace and her friend, they fell together."

Webber's father, David Webber, speaking through tears said: "I've lost my baby boy and I can't even comprehend how I'm going to deal with it.
"He loved it here, he couldn't wait to come back, it drove me mad.
"His heart will be with you guys for ever."
Barnaby Webber's cricket team captain, Chris Heron, said at the vigil: "The team is struggling, but everyone has been very supportive. No one is shying away from a conversation or a shoulder to cry on."

Ian Coates' two sons, Lee and James, laid flowers and football shirts at the scene of his death and described their father as a die-hard Nottingham forest fan and a keen fisherman.
Lee said: "He was due to retire in four months - he was still grafting... He was everyone's friend, always willing to help. Nobody deserves this, but he definitely didn't."
Police say a van was stolen from the victim - who was in his 50s - and was later used to run over three people on Milton Street.
One man is in hospital in a critical condition and the two others are believed to have suffered minor injuries, while the 31-year-old male suspected of murder remains in custody after police were granted a 36 hour extension for questioning.
Police are said to be keeping an "open mind" over the motive of a city attack, but at this time believe there is no one else outstanding in connection with the incidents.
A spokesperson for the University of Nottingham said: "We are shocked and devastated by the news and our thoughts are with those affected, their families and friends."
Barnaby's parents, David and Emma Webber, have also released a statement on the "complete devastation" over the "senseless murder" of their "beautiful, brilliant, bright" son.
