A gender activist said on GB News that trans people are at threat of being 'erased'

Watch the moment a feisty debate broke out on GB News over whether gender identity should be taught in schools.

Joanne Lockwood, a trans woman who runs campaign group SEE Change Happen, argued that it is sensible for children to learn about gender issues.

“I think it’s important that our young people are educated on contemporary issues and what is going on in the world”, she said.

“Your report earlier about the Holocaust, LGBTQ+ people were victims of the Holocaust. When people are hearing this in the news, about various different gender identities, it’s important they get time to understand the way of the world.

“Just because the government across the water wants to erase transgender people, the reality is, we need to know about this.”

Ex-Tory MP and GB News presenter Miriam Cates chimed in to hit back at the remark about trans people being ‘erased’, claiming children are being taught biological inaccuracies.

“It’s not about erasing transgender people - it’s about telling the truth to children”, she said.

“There are only two sexes and people are not born in the wrong body, so why teach children this at school?”

Lockwood said much of the messaging around gender issues is ‘scaremongering’, citing the suggestion there are around 100 genders.

She reiterated the importance of children learning ‘contemporary’ issues, saying gender ideology is among them.

“It’s important to understand that people who are transgender exist what gender ideology is so they can find a sense of self”, she said.

“In the same way, we talk about sexuality - being straight, being non-trans. This is the language they’re picking up. We can ignore it or they’ll do their own discovery.”

Miriam Cates expressed concern about children being ‘taught how to behave’ towards others experiencing gender dysphoria.

The former Tory MP said young girls should be able to challenge trans women using women’s spaces without fear of being branded "unkind".

Lockwood argued: “What you’re doing here is using obtuse comments to try and paint trans people as some sort of predators.”

Miriam hit back: “Nope. I’m trying to say there’s a reason single-sex spaces exist. If girls are socially conditioned not to uphold those single-sex spaces, we are going to have a huge safeguarding challenge.”

The activist said Miriam's argument emphasises the need for gender issues to be taught in schools, before adding she believes the standard of education on the matter is much improved compared to when she was younger.
