Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have given their view on the debate

Joe Biden is the victim of a “soft coup”, a top Democrat has claimed as the president faces pressure to stand aside from the November election after his disastrous debate against Donald Trump last week.

The debate marked the first major clash between the two front-runners to the White House with the hope of getting voters on-side early and swing polls in their favour.

The CNN debate was held in Atlanta, Georgia, a key swing state which helped tip the balance of the 2020 vote with Biden winning the state by just over 12,000 votes.

Speaking on the debate, one former aide to Hillary Clinton said Biden’s inner circle may have forced the Potus into holding the contest so early.

“There has never been a debate this early before. Traditionally the debates are held after the Republican and Democratic conventions, which are in July and August,” the former aide told MailOnline.

“Most years the first debate is early September ahead of the November election.

“Biden's inner circle demanded this early debate. There is a growing belief this was a 'soft coup' because they know he isn't fit to govern and have known for some time.

“They wanted to test him against Trump early, while there was still time to replace him if he failed to rise to the occasion. Which, of course, he did spectacularly.”

Weighing in on the disastrous results, former president Barack Obama wrote on X: “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know.

“But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself.

“Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit.

“Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”

Former president Bill Clinton also wrote on X: “I’ll leave the debate rating to the pundits, but here’s what I know: facts and history matter.

“Joe Biden has given us 3 years of solid leadership, steadying us after the pandemic, creating a record number of new jobs, making real progress solving the climate crisis, and launching a successful effort in reducing inflation, all while pulling us out of the quagmire Donald Trump left us in. That’s what’s really at stake in November.”

Posting a video of his rally the day after the debate, Joe Biden wrote on Twitter; “Folks, I might not walk as easily or talk as smoothly as I used to.

“I might not debate as well as I used to. But what I do know is how to tell the truth.”

Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social: “This past Thursday night was a defeat not only for Biden, but for the entire Radical Left Democrat Party and the Fake News Media who have been lying to the American People as our Country was being destroyed.

“The Joe Biden on stage Thursday night was the SAME Joe Biden who gave us Open Borders, crushing inflation, rampant crime, two new wars, a disastrous Afghanistan embarrassment, and one international humiliation after another—and it will only get worse.

“The whole world should know that while Biden is the worst president in the history of our Country, America will be strong again, and very soon!”
