Tenerife search crews will be dealing with testing conditions and pathways full of crevices and hidden caves in their hunt for Jay Slater, according to travel writer Joe Cawley.
Speaking to Stephen Dixon and Ellie Costello, the writer said members of the public are joining the police in their search for the missing 19-year-old.
The teen, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared after an attempt to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus.
Speaking about the location in which Slater got lost, Cawley said it’s “very rugged”.

He added: “There’s valleys that stretch about 2,000 feet.
“There’s lots of crevices, lots of hidden caves and rocks. It’s a very difficult path to walk, let alone to find a lost person.

“I know the police are there, the mountain rescue teams are there and the voluntary fire rescue teams as well, and members of the public.
“It’s a vast area and they probably need people. There is a number over here to call if you’re over here and you want to join the search, that’s 061, that’s to join the official search because it’s very easy to get lost in that area.”
Asked by Stephen Dixon “what on earth” Slater will have been doing in that area in the first place, Cawley said he likely would have been willing to take on risks.
“He met people for an afterparty”, he said.

“Crazy things can happen. I don’t think there’s anything suspicious in that myself, it’s just a very remote part of Tenerife.”
The search area was quiet on Friday, with only a handful of police cars stationed at Rural de Teno park.
Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, who flew to Tenerife on Tuesday, said searching for her son was “an absolute living nightmare”.
Duncan told ITV News: “He’s the life and soul, he’s a beautiful boy.”
Slater was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with shorts and trainers and a black bag.
A fundraiser set up by Ms Law to “get Jay Slater home” has since received more than £23,500 in donations.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
