'The festival is a peaceful community. I feel like members of my family have died.

Two days after escaping a massacre in southern Israel, 26-year-old Arik Nani is finally home and starting to process the “inhuman” tragedy he witnessed at the Supernova festival.

Nani was among thousands of people mostly aged between 20 to 30 who attended the Nature Party festival, near Kibbutz Re’im close to Gaza in the south of Israel.

As Hamas terrorists crossed the border, the festival — which Nani said was a “global community of peace” — was among the first targets of Israel’s biggest attack in decades.

Local humanitarian agencies have recovered at least 260 bodies.

The first reports from the massacre are horrifying. Eyewitness accounts claim that women were raped alongside the dead bodies of their friends. Injured Israelis and festival goers from other nationalities were shot at close range. Mutilated bodies were left abandoned across the party space.

Drone footage shows widespread destruction, bullet holes, scorched earth and burnt out cars.

For Nani, the only option was to run.

“We had to run away for six hours across the desert,” he told GB News, “we covered 15 kilometres in dunes while the shooting followed us. It was chaos.

“There were dozens of missiles and rockets. Gunfire was coming in from everywhere, we just had to run.”

Nani was at the festival to celebrate his 26th birthday with a close friend, who also survived the attack.

But Nani said that everyone at the festival felt like family to him.

“No one was harming anyone at this party, we are a peaceful global community, it’s a global festival. Everyone here is trying to be better people and kind. I feel like members of my family have died.”

He added: “What happened there is Israel’s 9/11. Hamas did not act like humans. They committed disgusting acts.”

Nani was hospitalised when he returned to Tel Aviv and stayed with his brother.
