Shocking images captured the dramatic extent of the water-logged parking area

Britons returning from holidays abroad have been left devastated after a car park dozens of vehicles at Heathrow Airport flooded due to a "localised water issue".

Floodwaters engulfed a car park at Heathrow Airport early this morning, leaving dozens of vehicles partially underwater.

Video footage circulating online shows a section of the airport's parking area and a nearby road covered in water following what has been described as a "localised water issue".

Passengers returning from trips abroad have been urged to get in touch with their insurance providers as quickly as possible.

The car park in question is operated by a third-party provider rather than the airport itself.

In the worst-affected areas, water levels rose high enough to completely cover the front tyres of several parked cars.

Some vehicles had their headlights submerged beneath the floodwater.

The full extent of damage to the affected cars is not yet known.

Workers hurried at the scene on Wednesday morning to address the problem.

While the airport has confirmed that the water issue has now been fixed, the total number of vehicles damaged by the flooding has not been established.

Drivers whose cars may have been affected are being advised to contact their parking operator and motor insurer if needed.

A video shared on social media carried the caption "imagine landing at Heathrow today only to find your car like this".

One person commented: "Got back to the car to find my headlights dipped and the engine flooded!"

Another user wrote: "Partially submerged is a stretch."

A third added: "Imagine the post-holiday depression already starting to kick in then you come back to this... jeez."

A Heathrow spokesman said: "Yesterday morning, a localised water issue affected a Heathrow car park, operated by a third-party parking provider.

"The issue has since been resolved.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and advise that passengers who believe their vehicle may have been affected should contact their parking operator and, if necessary, their motor insurer."

Heathrow has continued to hold onto the crown as the UK's busiest airport, with some 7.2 million travellers passing through during December alone.

However, travel disruptions triggered by the Iran war has contributed to a noticeable drop in passenger traffic from the region.
