A protest has erupted at the gates of Downing Street in the wake of the fatal stabbing of three children in Southport as demonstrators throw objects at riot police.

Officers have detained a man wearing a balaclava after wrestling him off the road and onto the pavement.


Multiple others have also been detained by the Met Police.

Officers have been wrestling protesters to the ground and leading them away in handcuffs after they confronted lines of riot police.

Beer cans and glass bottles have been launched at a line of police, while flares have been thrown on to the statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square.

A few hundred protesters were heard chanting “Rule Britannia”, “save our kids” and “stop the boats”.

Demonstrators have been taking part in the Enough Is Enough protest in response to the frenzied stabbing attack in Southport on Monday at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club.

The attack saw Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, fatally stabbed.

Eight other children were also stabbed, with five children and two adults left in a critical condition.

This evening, protesters threw cans at police outside Downing Street, while other demonstrators chanted Tommy Robinson’s name around The Cenotaph.

Protesters also shouted abuse at nearby pro-Ukrainian demonstrators and police.

Some campaigners attempted to kick down a fence before being confronted by riot police.

Police have now formed a new line outside the Cabinet Office.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, remains in custody accused of murder and attempted murder following the incident at the dance studio in Hart Street.

The Muslim Council of Britain says Islamaphobic backlash began with a false rumour on the internet which was then stoked by misinformation from a Russian news site, which wrongfully associated the crime with Muslims.

The MCB paid tribute to the three young girls killed in Southport on Monday, before condemning "shocking scenes of far-right rioters running amok outside a mosque."

Four men have been arrested after hundreds of people were involved in rioting in Southport on Tuesday.

Unrest broke out near the town’s mosque leaving 49 Merseyside officers and four from Lancashire injured, as well as three police dogs that were hurt.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, and another on suspicion of Affray and Possession of a bladed article.
