“Rather than sitting in a train you are travelling to Malaga I spent eight hours in the sun”

A Cornish couple saved £247 by flying to Spain and back instead of taking the train to their destination in Britain.

Kristina Coulson and her husband Dan flew over 1,300 miles to Malaga and back to the UK to pick up their new car - since it was more affordable than taking the train.

The pair live in Cornwall with their four children, and a train would cost them up to £200 per person just for a one-way journey.

After doing some research, the support worker realised it was cheaper to fly from Newquay to Malaga and back to Manchester, with flights being as cheap as £54.

They stayed in a hotel near where the pair were picking up the new Skoda Yeti, then drove home.

The total cost of the trip was £153 - £54 on flights and £45 for a hotel.

Deciding to see the positive in the trip, Coulson, who had recently suffered a car accident, said she was sent in the direction of sunshine.

“Everything was on time - it was just lovely and easy. On a flight you are guaranteed a seat, you don’t have to stand up for hours on the train, and it is quicker,” she said.

The mother was hit by a drunk driver on December 12, and while she luckily wasn’t injured, she was in need of a new car.

“Having been hit by a drunk driver I’m not in a position to buy what I wanted but for now the car I’m getting is enough,” she said.

She added: “On Facebook, everyone is getting return flights for £30 so it seemed like a no-brainer to do it that way. The cheapest place to go to and from was Malaga.”

Coulson made the most of her trip, spending the day in sunny Malaga, enjoying the Spanish cuisine.

“Rather than sitting in a train you are travelling to Malaga I spent eight hours in the sun,” she said.

“It was quite a little adventure. Positive fun which has come from a few weeks of nightmares and phone calls.”
