Captain Tom Moore raised almost £40million for NHS Charities Together after the coronavirus pandemic reached the UK in 2020

The daughter of Captain Sir Tom Moore has denied benefitting from money raised by her father for charity during an exclusive interview with GB News.

Speaking to Nana Akua for the first time since the findings of an investigation by the Charity Commission, Hannah Ingram-Moore revealed that she has spent £500,000 in legal fees and associated costs to defend her reputation and denied that charity money was used for a spa building.

Asked about what happened to the £38.9million raised by her father, she told Nana Akua on GB News: "That money went through JustGiving to NHS Charities Together. We never touched a penny, could never have touched a penny.

"It was entirely designated to go to NHS Charities Together and that finished on the 30th of April 2020."

Asked about Captain Tom’s book deal, she explained: "He received over 225,000 birthday cards and within this we were picking up letters and requests from publishers that he should write a book.

"It was through the PR agency that was supporting my father through all of the craziness of raising £40million who said, ‘Well, we can introduce you to an agent. She's not one of the sharks. She'll treat you really well, Captain Tom.’

"And so she, the agent, went off at my father's behest to negotiate a book deal for him. She wasn't my agent. She was his agent, and she negotiated on behalf of my father, a terrific three-book deal."

Ingram-Moore added: "He was paid by the publisher to write those books. When he knew how much money he was going to be paid, we sat as a family and he decided what to do with it. It was his money, not my money, not the charity's money, his money for writing books, and he gave it to us.

"He was paid that money in 2020. He was still alive. If somebody had thought that he should have paid some of that money, they could have asked him, but nobody did. They waited until he died, and then came to me and said I should pay it. That book money was his."

When pressed by Nana on how the suggestion that money from the book deal would be going to charity, Ingram-Moore said: "I don't really know, but let's step back and say that when he was paid that money, we said, ‘Well, look, we'll support the launch of the charity with some of that money’.

"And the only press releases that were ever released weren't our press releases. There was one that went out in May of 2020 that said, 'Captain Tom's writing a book'. And at the bottom of that press release, it said 'the book will support the launch of the charity'.

"In the last press release that said 'he's written the book, you can come and buy it now', there was no link to the charity at all. And from the minute that those books went on sale, my father nor us have ever received a penny. He got paid to write them, but we've never received it, and will never likely to receive any money from the sales of those books."

The Charity Commission said of the book deal: "The family indicated that they would use part of the advance to help facilitate the creation and launch of a new charity (which would become the Captain Tom Foundation).

"Therefore, there was an informal understanding that the family was planning to use part of the advance to set up and launch a new charity, although no binding agreement was entered into with the family in this regard."

They added: "Carver PR was instructed by Mr and Mrs Ingram-Moore to use the wording 'sales from the books will support the Captain Tom Foundation'.

"Mr and Mrs Ingram-Moore repeatedly stated that they would use funds from the first publishing agreement to fund the charity and / or make a donation to the charity directly, following the first publishing agreement."
