TGI Fridays' future in the UK hangs in the balance as its owner, London-listed company Hostmore, has entered administration.

The company has put all 87 of its UK restaurants up for sale, with hopes to complete the process by the end of September.

This dramatic turn of events follows a near-total collapse in Hostmore's share price, which plummeted by 96 per cent since the beginning of the month.

The crisis was triggered when Hostmore abandoned its ambitious plans to acquire outlets in the US for £177million. The deal fell through due to a management change that would have prevented Hostmore from collecting royalties on the TGI Fridays brand.

Administrators from Teneo have been appointed to oversee the process, as Hostmore scrambles to secure a future for the popular restaurant chain on British high streets.

Hostmore has said it is not expecting to “recover any meaningful value” from the sale of stores.

TGI Fridays has been a fixture in the UK since the 1980s, known for its American-style dining and lively atmosphere. The chain's first UK branch opened in Birmingham, quickly spreading across the country.

However, recent times have seen a decline in the chain's fortunes. Hostmore revealed that UK sales have fallen by more than 10 per cent this year compared to last.

In 2021, the restaurants were briefly rebranded as simply 'Fridays', but the original name was restored after customers continued to use the familiar 'TGI's' nickname.

Hostmore is now pursuing a fully franchise-operated model for TGI Fridays in the UK. The company aims to sell its restaurants to individual owners, though it remains unclear if all 87 locations will be saved through this system.

The administration process has begun, but TGI Fridays restaurants continue to operate as normal for the time being.

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Hostmore's board expressed pride in their colleagues' efforts to implement a turnaround programme over the past 18 months.

They cited challenging trading conditions and macroeconomic factors as obstacles to their plans.

The administration process is expected to result in Hostmore being wound up and delisted from the London Stock Exchange. The company's shares have already been suspended from trading.

TGI Fridays' global presence extends far beyond the UK market. The chain boasts 128 restaurants in its largest market, the United States, including franchised locations.

Worldwide, TGI Fridays operates more than 270 restaurants across various countries. Despite the challenges facing its UK operations, the brand maintains a significant international footprint.

This development marks a significant shift for the once-thriving restaurant chain, which has been a familiar name in casual dining for decades.

As the administration process unfolds, the future of TGI Fridays in the UK remains uncertain, while its global operations continue.
