Tesco is set to axe a popular feature from its Clubcard app next week, affecting millions of shoppers across the UK.
Tesco claims the change is to ensure they continue offering "the best value and convenience" to shoppers.
From March 7, customers will no longer be able to use the "Pay In-Store" feature, formerly known as Tesco Pay+.
The change means shoppers can no longer pay for their shopping and collect Clubcard points in a single step.
Instead, customers will need to scan their Clubcard first before paying separately with a different payment method.
Tesco to scrap popular Clubcard service at checkouts next week
GETTY / TESCOTesco has begun phasing out the feature, with all linked card details set to be removed by the deadline.
An email sent to customers explained: "Between now and March 7, the pay in-store feature will be phased out and any linked card details will be removed, unless you're using them for GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery shopping.
"So next time you're in-store, you'll need to pay separately after scanning your Clubcard."
The change comes shortly after Tesco revealed it was launching a trial to offer personalised deals to Clubcard holders based on their most common purchases.
The change has sparked criticism from shoppers who valued the convenience of the feature.
Many customers used the app to avoid carrying a physical wallet.
On social media platform Reddit, one disgruntled customer wrote: "So annoying. How is it more convenient to turn what was one step, into two. Can't see how it's going to help with value either."
Others have expressed frustration at losing what they considered a time-saving feature.
The Pay In-Store function allowed customers to pay and collect Clubcard points simultaneously by simply scanning a code.
A Tesco spokesperson defended the decision, stating: "We regularly review the payment options available to our customers."
The supermarket giant insists the change won't significantly impact the Clubcard experience.
The spokesperson added: "It's still quick easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or by adding it to your Apple or Google wallet."
Tesco Clubcard customers could get a boost
TESCO | GETTYTesco maintains that customers will still have access to all Clubcard benefits despite the removal of the combined payment feature.
Customers still have alternatives to make their shopping experience smoother.
Tesco has advised that the Clubcard can be added to Apple or Google wallet, which may be a convenient option for those who relied on the mobile app for payment.
This would put all cards in the same place for a similar, though less streamlined experience.
The email to customers confirmed: "You can still earn points and access Clubcard Prices by simply scanning your Clubcard or app at the till. Or you can add your Clubcard to your Apple or Google Wallets."
