JD Wetherspoon is set to open its first Scottish university franchise pub after striking a deal with the University of St Andrews Students' Association ahead of the new academic year.
The pub chain will officially open its doors on September 4 inside the Students' Association building on St Mary's Place, marking the first Wetherspoon venue to arrive in the Fife coastal town.
It will feature its own dedicated entrance, while both students and members of the public will be able to access the full Wetherspoon menu throughout the year.
The Students' Association will continue to own and operate the space under the franchise agreement, meaning existing bar staff will remain employed and managed directly by the association.
The partnership was confirmed after students voted in favour of the proposal during a student body meeting held on April 28.
University trustees have also approved a £1.2million loan to support the franchising project and fund the venue's redevelopment works.
The agreement follows years of financial difficulties for the existing Main Bar venue, with university officials warning the current model had become increasingly unsustainable.
Chris Clarke, the Students' Association's chief operating officer, told students the bar had been losing money every year since Covid and described the existing arrangement as "risky" and "difficult to keep going".

Mr Clarke said the association had effectively been left with a choice between partnering with Wetherspoon or facing the prospect of going bust.
A survey carried out in December 2025 found 66 per cent of students would be unhappy with a franchise arrangement, although other students publicly backed the proposal, including campaign group "St Spoonsdrews".
Its ground-floor bar is now set to undergo a major refurbishment over the summer before freshers arrive for the start of the new academic year.
The redevelopment will include new carpeting, lighting, artwork, fixtures and fittings, alongside a redesigned bar layout intended to modernise the venue.

A new drinks dispense system will also be installed to support an expanded range of products, while the kitchen will receive upgraded equipment to allow staff to serve the full Wetherspoon food menu.
Students will also have a role in deciding the name of the new pub, with suggestions being invited based on the history and heritage of St Andrews.
The Students' Association confirmed existing student society activities currently hosted within the space will continue under the new partnership arrangement.
Student-only nights at neighbouring nightclub 601 will also remain protected following the franchise agreement.
Robert Moran, president of student opportunities at the Students' Association, said: "A partnership with JD Wetherspoon is a positive step forward for students in St Andrews, bringing new opportunities, increased employment, and better value food and drink.
"We're especially excited that students will help decide what the pub is called, as we work together to create a welcoming, inclusive, and student led space for all".
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: "We are delighted that a Wetherspoon pub is to open at University of St Andrews and believe it will be a great asset for the students' social life".
The pub chain already operates similar franchise partnerships at universities in Hull and Newcastle, while further university sites in Birmingham and Surrey are due to launch in July.
