The Battle For Number 10 programme saw Conservative and Labour party leaders face a 20-minute interview followed by another 25 minutes of questioning from audience members.
Both men were criticised over broken promises; Sunak was questioned over his failure to meet his five pledges while Starmer was put under the spotlight about having ditched his leftwing policies.
Audience members also gave the leaders a hard time with one former Conservative voter saying she did not know how to vote because she was "ashamed" of the government's record.
She highlighted the Prime Minister's decision to leave D-Day commemorations in France early and send David Cameron to take his place.
The audience member also noted how "trust broke down" during the Covid pandemic when both Boris Johnson and Sunak were found to have broken lockdown rules.
At another point, Sunak looked uncomfortable as Rigby pressed him on the Tories' promise to cut migration as it was pointed out that the figures have gone up.
Responding, Sunak said: "Before I got the job, everyone said it was impossible to get the numbers down at all. But we've showed that it is possible and now we have a clear plan to put a deterrent in place."
Pressed on the fact that this year is a record year, Sunak said: "If you look at the sum total of the time I've been PM, the numbers are down."

Meanwhile, Starmer was put on the spot by a member of the audience who interjected him about his plans for the economy.
The audience member said there had been no discussion of the issue in the 20 minutes the interview had been going on.
In response, Starmer said: " "We've set out the big change that we want to make but also what the first steps are going to be on day one.
"The day after the election, we want to start on our first steps, stabilising the economy to make sure we never go through a cost of living crisis like this before. Set up Great British Energy so we keep your bills down."
