It's important to supplement your skin care routine with a nutritious diet that nourishes your skin from the inside out

While mature women face specific skin concerns such as dry skin, wrinkles and sagging, it is still possible to achieve a more youthful, glowing complexion at any age.

Although implementing an effective skin care regime goes a long way, it's important to to understand that lifestyle factors also play a part.

A 62-year-old woman with an incredible complexion took to TikTok to share her secrets that go beyond skin care products.

Gym Tan (who goes by @californiaistoocasual on the social media platform) explained that she eats well, ensures that she gets enough sleep and maintains an active lifestyle.

Speaking to fellow skin enthusiasts, she said: "You guys are always asking me to drop my skin care routine. No fillers, no Botox, this is my natural skin."

To maintain a stunning complexion - described by commenters as "gorgeous" and "glowing" - the content creator advised "eating as healthily as you can".

"I try to get a good mix of everything," she revealed, "colourful fruits and vegetables, some carbs - and I eat protein with every single meal."

To ensure she meets her vegetable goals, Gym Tan opts for both raw and cooked veggies.

As for protein, prioritising this food group could work wonders for your skin. According to Emelia Nutrition, the amount you consume can directly influence how well nutrients are digested, absorbed and transported to your skin; how healthy your skin barrier is; and how well your skin heals.

She said: "Your body needs enough protein to create the healthy, glowing skin you dream of."

Aside from eating well, the skin care fan ensures she gets a decent amount of sleep, aiming for at least seven hours per night.

She also keeps active, telling her follows: "You've got to move and exercise. All that energy and oxygen is great for your skin."

TikTok users flooded the comments section of Gym Tan's video with praise for the sexagenarian.

One said: "I want to be like you." Another commented: "Wow, gorgeous skin." "This is the wisdom everyone needs," another chimed in.

Maintaining a healthy diet is hailed as an effective method for a great complexion, complementing a stellar skin care regime.

One dermatologist named the type of fat that is crucial for glowing, healthy skin, claiming that it is "excellent for elasticity and hydration".

The experts at Dermalogica weighed in on whether or not a healthy diet equals healthy skin.

They stated: "We know a healthy diet is essential to maintain and improve overall health and well-being.

"Having a varied diet from different food groups provides us with the nutrition we need for our entire body to function effectively, including the skin. Unfortunately, this doesn’t include over-processed junk food."

Problems that may occur as a result of a diet that doesn't meet your skin's needs include breakouts, congestion, dehydration/flakiness, dullness and sensitivity.

Therefore, skin care enthusiasts are advised to eat regular meals to maintain blood sugar levels; prioritise nutritional meals at regular times rather than eating on the go; supplement if necessary; and keep a skin tracker journal to try and isolate foods that don’t agree with their body and skin.
