"If you're not washing your face correctly, your skin care products aren't getting the chance to do what they need to do"
While the art of washing your face is something you probably think you've honed, a few common mistakes may be holding you back from reaching your skin goals.
Board-certified dermatologist ShereeneIdriss (@shereeneidriss on TikTok) took to the sharing platform with some insight into how skin enthusiasts should carry out the essential task of cleansing.
In a video entitled 'Four Cleansing Mistakes Everyone Makes', the dermatologist stated: "If you're not washing your face correctly, your skin care products aren't getting the chance to do what they need to do for your skin and you're basically [throwing] your money away.
"Let me tell you how to make this work better for you because cleansing your face is the first step of a solid skin care routine."

According to the expert, one common mistake "everyone" makes is "not cleansing long enough".
She said: "You're putting the cleanser on and washing it off right away with water but you're basically [throwing] the cleanser down the drain because you're not allowing it to sit.
"To really get the most bang for your buck, you need to massage the cleanser onto your skin and let it sit for at least a minute."
The dermatologist revealed that she pays particular attention to the skin around her nostrils when massaging in her cleanser.
This is because "we tend to accumulate a lot of sweat and gunk" in this part of the face.
Another big mistake people make when washing their face is only cleansing once, according to the dermatologist.
Just as experts recommend shampooing your hair twice - double cleansing your face is just as essential.
Indeed, washing your face just once is "probably why you have mascara marks on your pillowcase".

If you are wearing sunscreen during the day - which you always should be - and any makeup, a double cleanse is crucial.
"You do need to start with something to remove the gunk before going in with the cleanser," the skin guru instructed.
Shereene recommended a micellar water by Bioderma but similar products are available via most major skin care brands.
Again emphasising the importance of a double cleanse, the expert concluded: "It acts like a magnet that lifts off the dirt before you go in for a wash."
