Even if people are approaching the very end of the day, the dermatologist said it is very important to still look after your skin
The hours before bedtime offer a vital window of opportunity for skin renewal and repair, making your evening skincare routine one of the most crucial parts of maintaining healthy skin.
According to consultant dermatologist at Stratum Clinics, Dr Sasha Dhoat, night-time presents unique advantages for skincare treatments.
"Night-time is a period of vital skin renewal, a unique window of opportunity to repair damaged tissue and regulate water loss through the skin," explained Dr Dhoat.
This optimal timing stems from being free of everyday skin stressors that typically affect us during waking hours.
Performing a skin care routine just before going to bed, can help it repair better
GETTYThe expert told individuals to consider adding an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) to their routine.
She said: "AHA increases the rate of exfoliation of the skin surface, promoting cell turnover and improving the texture and clarity of skin. It boosts its thickness and stimulates collagen production, leading to a fresher appearance."
Dr Dhoat said just before you get into bed to get some shuteye, it is a great opportunity to apply collagen-stimulating products such as retinoids.
"Antioxidant serums can pack maximal punch when there is no threat from free radicals, like sunlight and debris. Certain antioxidants also brighten your skin, calm irritation and smooth fine lines. Lastly but crucially, it’s key to support the skin barrier and to moisturise, since skin hydration levels can dimmish overnight."
People with poor sleep patterns can trigger increased production of the stress hormone cortisol, which may worsen various skin conditions.
"Poor sleep can lead to eczema, acne and rosacea," Dr Dhoat explained.
"Without deeper phases of sleep, cell turnover cannot occur, resulting in more prominent signs of ageing, such as fine lines and reduced elasticity.
"The most elaborate skin care night-time regimes will have limited ability to work their magic if an individual is sleep-deprived."
