A daily skin care routine can slow down how the skin ages

Our skin goes through a lot, so tending to it properly every day can help to protect it and tone down the signs of ageing.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, experts revealed small steps you can make every day for dramatic results.

Dermatologist at Noted Dermatology Margaret Schwarz said: "Our favourite way to look younger is by making small, everyday changes that can really add up.

"I compare it to going to the gym - doing a little bit every day for years will get you better results than doing nothing and suddenly running a marathon."

She explained three things everyone should consider for a youthful appearance are having a good skin care routine, making the right diet choices and generally maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

When it comes to what we put on our skin, a cleanser is the best place. Margaret said: "The foundation of any skin care routine is a gentle cleanser. We encounter so many pollutants during the day and a cleanser helps remove those and reduce damage to the skin."

Opting for products packed full of anti-ageing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and retinol can also help to smooth the skin's appearance.

The expert continued: "Use a moisturiser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides to keep your skin barrier nice and strong for protection.

"Using antioxidants like Vitamin C can help your skin fight off damage from pollution and stress. Retinol, which is a form of vitamin A, can help your skin look younger by speeding up cell turnover and reducing fine lines."

Retinol is often hailed for increasing the elasticity of the skin, which can make it appear younger and limit the signs of ageing.

Vitamin C also helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, according to some studies, and it can work when applied topically and when consumed through your diet.

Margaret also recommended using an SPF every day as this will offer protection from damaging UV rays.

This comes as experts shared how changing your pillowcase fortnightly can help minimise breakouts and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Opting for a silk pillowcase can be particularly beneficial as some have claimed this is gentle on the skin.
