A seemingly harmless activity could be luring mice into your property

An expert in pest control has warned Britons that bird feeders could be luring unwanted visitors into their homes.

Mice are not hibernators, yet they are still considered seasonal pests because they become more troublesome during winter.

Rodent activity increases in February as rats and mice start scrounging for food and seek refuge in the warmth of our homes.

Once the pesky invaders make it into a dwelling, it's a matter of time before they start reproducing in great numbers.

To help ward off the rodents, one expert discourages using bird feeders, which attract all sorts of wildlife.

Sarah Beck, operations manager at The Pest Master, explained: “We [... ]highly recommend against feeding the birds, although it is a very nice thing to do, you will encourage rodent activity close to your property.”

The expert continued: “The best way to deter a rodent from entering your property is to start outdoors.

“Make sure any plants grow up the walls of your property. Make sure log stalls are kept away from the property and in good order."

Naturally, homeowners should also ensure all bin lids remain closed and that no rubbish is left lying around.

The next step in rodent control is inspecting different parts of the home for cracks and holes.

When it comes to barricading entry points against rodents, preventive measures may differ for different types of properties, noted Beck.

“For example, detached properties, in most cases, should be able to stop the problem permanently,” explained the expert.

“Finally, there are terraced properties and flats, their properties are very difficult to stop rodents from entering as they could be coming from any property that is connected to yours.”

Any holes discovered around the property should be sealed immediately. Homeowners should look out for any gaps around pipe works.

While rats frequently use pipes as a means of transport, they can also use the passageways as a shelter for their litter.

Households that fail to keep their areas rodent-free are encouraged to seek professional help.
