Mature ladies have been advised to go for a "dewy" look rather than "caking" their makeup on

While the right makeup techniques can flatter your features to perfection and even take years off your age, the wrong ones can highlight your flaws and age you prematurely.

A beauty enthusiast shared how women over 60 can avoid making ageing mistakes when it comes to their makeup. She advised they ditch the heavy concealer underneath their eyes.

Beverly Soutar (known as @beverlysoutar on TikTok) took to the sharing platform with a word of warning for ladies in their 60s and beyond.

She said: "Over 60s ladies, no need for liquids and powders that dry out your skin and make you look older. Heavy eyeliner can also age you. Try a lighter makeup that saves you time and looks natural."

Offering some specific guidance on concealer, the makeup fan advised against "piling" it on under your eyes - "it's not helping you".

A second expert shared her insight on concealer, revealing the mistake women over 40 make that "highlights every imperfection".

According to Beverly, the secret to a "youthful glow" is going for a "dewy" look as opposed to "caking" your makeup on.

She recommended investing in cream products that are easy to apply. The makeup experts at RMS Beauty agreed that cream products are excellent for mature skin.

They said: "If you want a velvety-smooth finish, a cream foundation is a sure bet. These foundations are easy to apply and buildable and offer more coverage than a liquid foundation but with less weight.

"Creams are great for evening the look of skin tone, keeping skin hydrated, and achieving a slightly more matte finish than a liquid foundation can usually provide.

"Dry skin types love cream foundation for its rich, luxuriously hydrating formula. It’s also a great solution for ageing or sensitive skin because the ingredients can pack skincare-like benefits that help support and soothe the skin."

When applying a cream foundation, you can use your fingertips, a makeup brush or a beauty sponge, although the RMS makeup gurus recommend a makeup brush to ensure "even, smooth texture".

While liquid foundation has its benefits - as it is both natural looking and provides excellent coverage - the wrong product may create more problems than it solves.

Indeed, the experts stated: "A liquid foundation that isn't properly formulated for your skin type can sometimes settle into fine lines and wrinkles, making your skin look older than it is."

While makeup can be used at any age to revamp your look or accentuate your best features, the strategies you use in mid-life and beyond may differ from your 20s, 30s and even 40s.
